<Artist’s Notes>

My works are inspired by the walks I take outdoors. They also reflect my meditations and thoughts on the nature and the universe. The works contain iconic symbols of the Four Gracious Plants (plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums and bamboo), which are based on the Confucian tradition but are now considered as universal symbols of the four seasons.

I created an atmospheric field consisting of cell-like particles and made my brushstrokes resemble clouds. I also overlapped bamboo leaves that look like shimmering semi-transparent films with the images of plum blossoms and chrysanthemums, and attempted to signify the image of the nature in other ways.

The clouds were visually portrayed as abstract particle-like forms. In the works, the circles have the movement of the air and the untouchable water drops of the clouds as their elements. I painted the clouds and sky as the space where life exists and placed plants based on the Confucian philosophy of the East as metaphors of the nature, in order to express my wish to be carefree and playful within the nature.

In this exhibition, I attempted to imitate (bang, ) traditional landscapes as an extended effort of previous works which focused on the notion of wandering freely in companionship with nature through contemplation and meditation.

Imitation is a traditional method of studying paintings in the East which refers to a close observation of paintings and deciphering the meaning contained in it to interpret it. In other words, rather than simply copying the original, the artist learns to create originally based on the understanding of the essence of the work.

In this exhibition, I imitated the landscapes of Shen Zhou (沈周) from the Ming Dynasty. Shen Zhou lived a life of peace without entering a government position and enjoyed academics and the arts. His attitude was reflected in his paintings which allow viewers to feel the serenity and purity of the landscapes.
