매일의 다른 눈으로 보는 풍경

조숙현 (미술 비평)의 글 중 발췌

하연수의 작업은 주변의 자연을 관찰하는 데서 출발한다. 강릉 바다를 매일 바라보고, 정원에서 바라본 꽃의 형태를 관찰하는 데서 시작했다. 처음에는 풍경의 장대함과 꽃의 표면적인 아름다움에 매료되어 그림 묘사를 위한 관찰에 집중했지만, 매일 같은 풍경을 바라보다보니 조금씩 새로운 세계를 발견하게 되었다고 한다. 그리고 문득 그 양상이 사람과도 닮아있다는데 생각이 미치게 됐다. 겉모습만으로는 내면을 파악할 수 없지만, 계속 내통해가며 내부에 숨겨져 있던 타인의 세계가 발견되는 것과 같은 이치이다. 작가는 매일의 풍경을 다른 시선으로 발견하고 그 차이점을 그림으로 포착했다. 나아가 그리는 대상을 통해 매일의 작가의 감정을 투영하고, 자신과 주변인의 마음을 그 속에서 발견했다. 관객이 그림 속에 들어가서 작가와 관객의 물아일체를 성립하는 기법은 서양화에는 존재하지 않는, 한국화에 소속된 기법이다. 그러나 여기서는 그보다는 동시대 예술가의 개성과 관점에 초점을 맞추어야 한다. 동시대 미술은 장르와 이즘(ism)을 넘어, 예술가 개인의 발언에 집중한다. 하연수의 그림은 주변의 자연과 풍경을 밀도 있게 관찰하며, 그것을 바라보는 작가의 매일 다른 관점과 감정을 내포하고 있다는 데서 현대미술의 핵심을 회복한다.

HA’s work starts from observation of her surrounding nature ? the sea of Gangneung and the flowers of her garden. At first, she concentrated on the magnificence of the nature and the external beauty of the flowers. Yet, as the days of same landscape passed, she happened to find a new world ? the world which resembled human beings. It is like when you can see the inner world of a person through continuous communication. She looked at the landscape with different eyes every day and she found out the difference therein. She projected the difference and her emotions onto her paintings and this allows the viewers to walk into the art piece and become one body with the artist. In contemporary art, the sole speech of an artist is more important than genres and isms. HA’s paintings observe the nature and the landscape and reflect her different perspectives and emotions. Her paintings show the core of modern art.

일상에서 매일 바라보는 바다의 풍경이 스치는 바다와 다른 점이 있다면, 외부 상황과 바라보는 이의 마음 상태에 따라 다양한 스펙트럼을 품고 있다는 것이다. 바다의 풍경은 매일의 날씨와 상황에 따라 다르다. 낮의 바다, 밤의 바다, 파도가 칠 때의 바다, 잔잔한 바다, 발끝으로 차오르는 물결로 밀려오는 바다를 관찰하며, 작가는 자연이 주는 다른 느낌과 이에 다른 미묘한 감정의 변화를 찾으려고 했다. 이것은 작가가 주변의 대상을 관찰하며 자아와 인간사를 투영하여 그려냈던 원리와 같지만, 그동안 작가가 연구해왔던 색채에 대한 감각이 밀도를 더해 집약됐다. 새벽의 투명한 바다와 밤바다의 깊은 어둠을 바라보며, 색채의 풍요 속에 빠져든다. 매일의 다른 눈으로 보는 풍경 속에서 작가와 관객 자아의 모습을 발견하게 된다.

The sea of Gangneung became part of her ordinary life and the inspirations from the landscape of the sea turned into the subject of her artworks.

The sea is different every day: the sea of the day or night, the sea with the waves and the calm subtle sea. HA tries to focus on the different feelings the nature gives and the change of the emotions accordingly. With her sense of colors after long practice, her works deepened. In the landscape with different eyes everyday, the viewers will fall into the abundance of colors and find the artist and the viewers themselves.
