5. 작가노트

나의 작업은 야외를 거닐면서 영감을 받아 자연과 우주에 대한 명상과 사색을 담아낸다. 수묵으로 구름의 덩어리를 만들어 하늘과 함께 대기의 장(場)을 만들고, 그 위에 자연의 이미지를 형상화한다. 하늘과 구름은 우리들이 살아 숨 쉬는 대기이자 공기의 흐름을 느끼는 생명체를 살아있게 만든다. 너무나 당연하게 존재하고 있는 대기의 공간인 하늘, 그리고 구름은 나에게 시간의 흐름과 시공간을 넘나들 수 있는 상상의 나래를 펼칠 수 있게 하는 매개체가 된다.

이번 전시에서는 그동안 발표해 온 자연 안에서의 사색과 명상을 통해 자연과 벗하여 소요유(逍遙遊)하고자 하는 연계선 상에서 전통적인 산수화를 재해석하는 작업을 하였다.

전통 회화를 작업의 근간으로 삼고 내가 체험한 공간과 관념적인 공간을 실경과 넘나들면서 가상의 공간을 현존재의 공간으로 드러낸다. 전통 산수화의 전형을 가져오되 그것을 그대로 옮겨 그린 것이 아니라, 재구성하는 과정을 통해 선택한 부분을 하늘과 구름 형상 배경에 위치시켜 가상공간을 창조한다. 이 공간에서 우리는 자유를 꿈꾸며 자연을 벗 삼아 숨 쉴 수 있기를 바란다.

Nothing Remains in the Same Place

In today’s fast-developed capitalist world, humans often lead affluent lives centered on material values. Without even the slightest reprieve to reflect on the basis of our inner selves, our busy daily lives drive ourselves away from the essence of life, of pursuing spiritual values. However, beneath the reality of neglecting to reflect on one’s inner self is the longing for transcendence and freedom to treat one’s feelings and reflect on one’s life in the search for true life. In this respect, meditation and contemplation could be understood as measures for healing the inner self and leading oneself to an enriched spiritual world for balance in life. The spaces of transcendence and freedom the artist found through daily walks in nature become the infinite sky that resembles the artist’s imagery and becomes an inspiration for creativity. 

The artist portrays the sky as an immeasurable and infinite space, thus giving sanctity to the concept of utopia. The scenery and the four gracious plants overlapping the clouds in the sky are metaphors of nature reinterpreted through the traditions of Oriental painting that serve as a passageway for spiritual thinking where the past and present coexist. The added use of Oriental pigments, such as gold and silver dust, accentuates the sacred and majestic expressions of nature. The movements of the scenery and the plum blossom tree branches are expressive, and the concise lines deliver a solid yet flexible feeling. The floating clouds sedately form shapes only through the light and shade of the black ink, thus inducing inner peace through lyrical sentimentality. Noteworthy techniques ?purposely blotting the ink by smearing the ink on wet surfaces or splashing the ink by painting over the surface when the ink remains wet are used. Such techniques maximize the sacred atmosphere created by the clouds. The accidental ink smears represent infinite possibilities and the expression of free phenomena. The artist also presents a folding screen work in this exhibition, centered on the floating clouds in the sky and bamboo trees, to portray the encounters with silent nature within an endlessly spreading infinite. The work draws its viewers to stand in front of the folding screen and imagine the world beyond to contemplate and be in complete awe of nature. 

Although differing in its pace, nature continues to change with the force of life, at times abundantly and fleetingly. Perhaps this is why the scenery and the four gracious plants shrouded in clouds in the artwork never seem to remain in the same place despite being portrayed on a still screen. This is similar to life, where time never ceases to pass, and Zhuangzi’s idea of Xiaoyaoyou, the notion of free and easy wandering. The work thus presents its viewers an opportunity to experience transcendence and freedom through meditation and contemplation within the sublimity that is nature. The soaring yet curbing mountain hills that have existed in harmony with the free-flowing clouds may make you become a phoenix flying freely in nature. By gaining an in-depth understanding of the artist’s imagery, viewers will be presented with the rare opportunity to look back on the restless past and consider the principles of life and nature.
